The body is designed to respond to stress. When we perceive a threat or challenge, the brain activates the body's stress response, influencing the autonomic nervous system, hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension, and digestion. This response helps prepare us to respond to challenges and protect ourselves.
However, when stress becomes prolonged, the body may have difficulty returning to a more relaxed state. Ongoing stress can influence sleep, digestion, pain sensitivity, muscle tension, and overall well-being. Past injuries, surgery, and other life experiences may also shape how we experience physical sensations and respond to stress.
Fascia is connective tissue found throughout the body, surrounding, supporting, and connecting muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. These tissues form a complex, three-dimensional network that provides structural support and allows tissues to move and interact with one another.
Fascia and the structures it connects interact with the body's nervous, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, and reproductive systems through complex anatomical and physiological relationships. Understanding these connections provides a broader perspective on how the body functions as an interconnected whole.
For example, the nervous system plays an important role in regulating digestion. Stress, changes in movement, tissue sensitivity, and other physiological processes may also influence how the body feels and functions. Although symptoms in one area do not necessarily indicate a restriction in another, considering these relationships can provide a broader perspective when exploring persistent or complex physical concerns.
Healing is not about forcing the body to change, but creating an environment that supports comfort, awareness, and more ease in the body.
My approach to hands-on treatment is guided by listening, gentle contact, and respect for each person's individual experience. Rather than forcing a predetermined outcome, I adapt treatment to the body's responses and allow time for those responses to unfold.
Gentle, individualized treatment can provide an opportunity to slow down, notice bodily sensations, and experience relaxation. Treatment is guided by your comfort, needs, and goals.
Your body is unique. Your healing journey is, too.
If you are experiencing persistent physical discomfort or are interested in a whole-body approach to care, I invite you to learn more about the Ocean Myofascial Release treatment approach, or schedule an appointment.
